Mangy Moose to "Raise the Roof" for hurricane victims
JACKSON, Wyo.: Recognizing New Orleans' rich musical heritage, the Mangy Moose Saloon in Teton Village will host a benefit concert on Friday, Sept. 30, to help the city and its musicians recover from Hurricane Katrina.
"Raise the Roof: Jackson Hole's Benefit to Rebuild New Orleans" will raise money for a pair of nonprofits working toward a sustainable future for the region. Proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity, which is spearheading a widespread rebuilding campaign in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, and the Tipitina's Foundation, which is helping New Orleans musicians recover.
Area businesses are donating dozens of prizes for an auction and raffle at Friday's show. Among the items to be auctioned are a Weekend Warrior ski pass, valued at $700, from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort; a whitewater kayak, valued at $800, from Snake River Kayak & Canoe; and a fine art print by wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen, valued at $500. Also to be auctioned are a pair of handmade wooden bookshelves crafted by carpenter Eric Huyffer and the original "Raise the Roof" poster art by Amy Ringholz.
Music will be provided by House of Vibe Allstars, a ska and funk band from Los Angeles. There also will be a New Orleans-style jam session of Jackson Hole musicians, featuring members of Mandatory Air, Soul Impressions and other special guests. Showtime is 9 p.m. Tickets cost $20, which includes raffle entry.
"We want to give back to a city that has given so much to us through music," says Dom Gagliardi, Mangy Moose music director. "Whether we realize it or not, all of the jazz and funk we have ever heard has roots with New Orleans musicians."
The goal of the benefit is to help residents of the Gulf states move out of shelters and rebuild their lives. Habitat for Humanity is planning to build thousands of homes in "Operation Home Delivery," possibly its largest construction project ever. New Orleans musicians Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis are serving as honorary chairs of Habitat's rebuilding effort.
The Tipitina's Foundation, a 501c(3) organization committed to the cultural preservation and reconstruction of New Orleans, was formed in 2002. Since its founding, the foundation has raised money to provide instruments for underprivileged children in New Orleans classrooms and business training and tools for New Orleans musicians. In light of the disaster, the Foundation has shifted its focus to providing housing and jobs for musicians, as well as clothing and instruments.
