This Land Is Outside Land

Outside Lands

nifty music festival this year called the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival right in our own back yard. the event spanned three days toward the end of august and was held in golden gate park. 150,000 made there way through the park to catch 65 bands playing on six stages.

this fest had its share of headliners (Radiohead on friday, Tom Petty on saturday, and Jack Johnson on sunday), but it was decidedly not mainstream, with a broad variety from hip hop to alt-rock to world beat.

the festivities had a hint of jazz fest to it with the plethora of music spread over a multitude of stages interspersed with food stands and beer tents. good vibes pretty much ruled the day, as the crowd was laid back and rules were scarce.

jackie greene stole the show for me... i hadn't heard of this cat before, and his afternoon set on saturday was sizzling. this guy is an SF local with a southern rock sound (think allman bros) that just commands your attention. check him out if you get a chance.

steve winwood also put up a great set. here's a little taste of his classic, the low spark of high-heeled boys [video].

and, of course, any time widespread plays a few blocks from your house it's a good thing.

the chronicle posted a solid assessment of the what transpired.
